  • Fay Hazen Fariss

    A four-sport star in the mid-1930s at CHS, Fay Fariss continued his stellar play at Sewanee Military Academy. After a standout year on the gridiron, he joined elite company at the University of Tennessee where his speed at the tailback position earned him the nickname “The Savannah Comet”. While at UT, Fariss also played baseball, basketball and ran track. One of only three men from CHS to play football at UT, Fariss was a member of the 1940 and ’41 football teams. In addition to being SEC champions, the ‘40 team carried an undefeated season into the Sugar Bowl before falling to Boston College. While at UT, Fariss played under the famed Gen. Robert Neyland. 

  • Ray Scott

    Ray Scott is a true golfing legend in West Tennessee. After a superb prep career at CHS in the mid-1960s, he became the first golfer to ever be awarded a scholarship to the University of Tennessee-Martin. While there he was medalist in the ‘69 Volunteer Conference Tournament and the ’69 Tennessee Intercollegiate Conference Tournament, and was a collegiate All-American in 1971 and 1972. In 1985, Scott became the first golfer inducted into UT-Martin Athletic Hall of Fame. He was the head golf professional at Pickwick Landing State Park Golf Course for 33 years, organizing numerous charity events and coaching, influencing and mentoring multiple generations of young golfers. 

  • Pete Williams

    One of the best all-around athletes to ever emerge from Hardin County, Pete Williams excelled at every turn. He led the basketball team in assists for three seasons, averaging 15 per game. He was named to the All-West Tennessee and Tennessee Sportswriters All-State football teams as a senior, playing QB and punter. He led the baseball team in batting average and stolen bases for two seasons, and his ‘83 team lost in the state semifinal to finish the season 27-1. As a senior the Jackson Sun awarded him “Male Athlete of the Year”. Williams ultimately decided to play baseball at Union University where he set school records for runs scored in a season, bases stolen in a season and home runs in a single game.
