CLASS OF 2013

  • Richard "Pete" Anderson

When talking to former players, it seems that few coaches had as much impact on their squads as Richard “Pete” Anderson. Coach Anderson had a successful coaching tenure on the gridiron of Central High in the 1950’s and 1960’s. During that time, he presided at the helm of some of the most accomplished football teams that Savannah has ever seen, winning multiple Volunteer Conference titles and playing in several more conference championship games. Many players under the watch of Coach Anderson went on to play football at the collegiate level. Pete passed away in August 2014.

  • Rick Barker

Few can rival the resume of former Central High football player and coach Rick Barker. After a stellar career as a tackle at CHS in which he was named First Team All West Tennessee and Honorable Mention All State, Rick attended the University of Chattanooga on a football scholarship. While there, he became a four-year starter at defensive tackle from 1963-67, and was elected captain of the team during his senior campaign. In 1971 he served as a graduate assistant football coach at the University of Southern Mississippi before returning to Central High as head football coach in 1972. Over the next several years he went on to serve in administration at the school while fulfilling a variety of coaching duties.

  • R.C. Johnson

R.C. Johnson was a teacher and coach for 46 years, many of them during the 1950’s and 1960’s at Central High School in Savannah. During his career, Coach Johnson took eight boys’ basketball teams and one girls’ basketball team to the state tournament. In 1963 he led both the boys’ and girls’ teams from Central High to the state tournament, one of his most impressive coaching feats. In 1992 he was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, and in 2000 he was named one of the Coaches of the Century. Coach Johnson passed away in February 2001.

  • Java Reynolds Stanley

After establishing herself as a standout basketball player at Hardin County from 1983-87, Java Reynolds Stanley signed a basketball scholarship with Memphis State University. From 1987-1991, she excelled for the Lady Tigers, setting multiple records. To this day, she still ranks near the top of many statistical categories, including being ranked 8th all time in free throw percentage and holding the 8th and 9th best free throw percentage seasons in the history of the university. During her senior season she was second on the team in scoring, and also led the team in three point percentage. She eventually returned to HCHS where she taught and coached for several years. Java passed away in November 2015.
